What Is a Computer Network?

                        A computer network is a collection of computers and other devices (nodes) that use a common network protocol to share resources with each other over a network medium.

NOTE: - A network could be an assortment of computers, servers, mainframes, network devices, peripherals, or alternative devices connected to one another to permit the sharing of knowledge. A wonderful example of a network is the net that connects numerous individuals everywhere on the globe.

Types of networks:-

                         There are many types of computer networks. The differences among them are usually based on perspective. For example, computer networks frequently are classified by the geographical area they encompass (e.g. Local Area Networks and Wide Area Networks), their typologies (e.g. Point-to-Point or Broadcast), or the type of communications path they use and the manner in  which data are transmitted across this path (e.g., Circuit-Switched and Packet-Switched).

•  Classifying Networks :-

                       Computer networks frequently are classified by the geographical area they encompass. One classification is Local Area Network. Another is Wide Area Network. There are also metropolitan area networks, Global Area Networks, Personal Area Networks, and

Storage Area Networks.

1. Local Area Networks
2. Wide Area Networks
3. Metropolitan Area Networks
4. Global Area Networks
5. Personal Area Networks
6. Storage Area Networks    etc.  

•   Classifying Networks by Their Topology:-

                            Another way of classifying networks is by their topology, which describes the basic design of a network. Network topology is very much like a road map. It details how key network components such as Nodes & Links are interconnected. A network's topology is comparable to the blueprints of a new home in which components such as the Electrical System, Heating and Air Conditioning System, and Plumbing are integrated into the overall design. 

There are three general interconnection schemes:-

1. Point-to-Point
2. Broadcast
3. Multi drop etc.
